What Cis Men Can Do To Support Women, Trans Men and Non-Binary People in the Time of Abortion Bans
As a non-binary Trans person with a uterus, I have been pretty disappointed with how little I have seen cishet (cisgender and heterosexual) men show up for all people whom these new abortion policies impact (cis women, Trans men and non-binary people). The 25 state senators who voted in favor of abortion restrictions in Alabama were all — yes every single one- a white cisgender male. The opposition to the bill included just three — THREE- white cis men among six state senators of color (both men and women), one white woman and two more senators who did not participate in voting. What this says is that for those of us who vehemently oppose any abortion restrictions, such as myself, racism, xenophobia and a lack of cultural and ethnic diversity in government is partially responsible for the absolutely fucked state of affairs we’re in right now. Another way to say this is white cis rich men got us into this mess, and their demographics are no coincidence. White (cis) men; you’re time is up. And we’re not sorry. Now yes, I know I’m gonna get a flurry of “not all men” horseshit, and yes I will concede some cis men appear more willing to listen to people who are actually affected by these bills than others.
